Wave and firmware update

If you are an owner of a Wave S8500 handset – do not be tempted to do down the route in flashing with unofficial firmware nor trick Kies into thinking your handset is in need of an update…

this was surmised succinctly by a poster on the forum by v1rtu4l :

I’d also recommend you NOT to mess around with the registry and then update via KIES for the following reasons.

Kies does do incremental updates. That is to say, that it only updates certain parts of the firmware which need updating (or are available with a newer build/version).

Now let’s have a little example here.

Lets say the firmware consists of three parts A, B and C.
Lets say you got version v1 of part A, v1 of part B and v1 of part C.

Now you see that Kies wont give you an update and you change the registry to make Kies think you got another firmware on your phone and hence give you the update for the other firmware.

Kies might download a new version of part A and part C and flash it onto your phone.

No what you basically have on your phone is A:v2 B:v1 C:v2 and if you are unlucky your phone will be stuck in a reboot-loop or some other things wont work, because A, B and C were never tested in that combination.

Now you are going to say “why would Kies only upgrade A and C ?”, because KIES does only update parts of the firmware, which have new versions.

you probably did fake Kies into thinking you got another firmware from another region which by default had part A:v1, B:v2, C:v1 so Kies thinks its only necessary to update A and C, because the other regions firmware already got a B-component that is compatible with v2 of A and C.

doing it the “hard” way and flashing by yourself is just as secure if not even more secure than messing with the registry in combination with Kies.

just never do a “bootfiles” flash and you are good to go. only flashing the bootfiles wrong or having an error while doing that can ever brick your phone in a way you are not able to reflash.

As it stands, the unofficial way involves using the Multiuploader… the latest firmware out now is JF8, have heard and read so many people who have b0rk3d their handsets as a result by flashing to JH1, which caused a lot of instability issues…such as handset rebooting constantly when going into SMS….

Please take heed (You are ultimately responsible for your actions on the handset and may void the warranty!) and wait patiently for Kies to notify that there is an update without messing up and tricking Kies…PATIENCE
